Campground Photos and Mother Nature Comes Through Again

Ahmeek, MI.

57 deg. clear, no wind.

Forecast = Sunny. Highs 73 to 78. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph.

Today I'd like to show you some of the photos of the Sunset Bay Campground that Jim took on Thursday, shortly after we arrived here.

This fist one is of their little office where you check in. If you've made a reservation and there's no one at the office, you can just go ahead and go to your site if you know the number and set up.

There's a CG map posted to help you find your site.

This would be a typical view of the lake as you enter the main part of the CG. The sites on the lake side of the road are tent sites, but the RV sites are right across the road and the tents don't seem to block the view very much. : )

This is site # 13 where I'm parked. The road is just in front of  me and I'm facing almost directly West and towards the lake.

The view from the road, looking back at my site.

Yesterday, it was cloudy in the morning and then about 3:00 or so, it started raining. There was also some thunder, but nothing close by. By about 6:00 is was raining quite hard and it looked like it was going to rain well into the night.

But,  ,  ,  ,  ,  ,  just before sunset, the skies to the west started to clear and we witnessed another beautiful sunset!!! : )  In this first photo the sun was just peaking out from behind the clouds.

Then, as the sun set lower, it started to shine on the bottom side of the clouds and turned them a beautiful orange color!!!!

So, for the second day we again had a beautiful sunset. I really didn't think we'd be able to see the sun set at all, but "Mother Nature" came through again.  ; )

Wisconsin To Michigan and Sunset Bay

Ahmeek, MI.

57 deg. clear, no wind.

Forecast = Scattered rain showers and isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon. Mostly cloudy. Highs around 80 inland to around 74 at The shore. Light winds becoming north 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Chance of rain 40 percent.

Jim and Linda knew that we had pretty far to go yesterday, so by 8:25 we were pulling out of the CG in South Range, WI.  To my surprise, when we got back on US 2, we turned West instead of East and took it back into Superior!!!

Well, there was a reason for this as Jim and Linda had spotted a Truck Stop that had an easy entrance and exit with a fuel island that was very convenient.  You see, Jim had looked up the average prices for fuel in Wisconsin and Michigan and had found out that a drink of good old #2 in Wisconsin would cost about 10 cents a gallon less than in Michigan!!!!

So, , , , , , , he filled my tank to the top and soon we were back on US 2 heading East.

2 heading East was a fairly good road with a few short construction areas in Wisconsin. Once we crossed into Michigan, we only went about 10 miles or so before turning NE on MI 28. 28 then took us over to US 45 where we turned North and followed it up to Rockland where we turned NE on MI 26 and followed it all the way up here to Ahmeek on the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Once into Ahmeek, we turned off on a city street and then followed a narrow 2 lane paved road for about 5 miles until we came to a sign that pointed to the Sunset Bay Campground off to the left. Then it was another mile of dirt/gravel road until we came to the CG which is right on the shore of Lake Superior!!!

Now, I knew from listening to Jim and Linda talk that this CG was out in the "boonies", but I really didn't think it was this far out!!!!

On that last mile of road, we met a car and with my right mirror just inches away from a tree, the car was just able to squeeze by!!!! : O

I don't know what would have happened if we had met a larger vehicle!!

For the most part, all the roads were good, and we made pretty good time considering that there were quite a few small towns that we had to go through. Oh, and when we got to Houghton, up here on the peninsula, we had to wait about 20 minutes for a draw bridge to close.

But, even with my stop for a drink and having to wait for the bridge, it was just 1:30 when we pulled into the CG. So, it took us a total of 5 hours and 5 minutes to travel the 228 miles over here.

Jim took some photos of the CG and my site, but this post is getting long enough already, so I'll just post this one photo of our first sunset last night, looking from the CG out over Lake Superior.

They call this CG Sunset Bay CG for a reason!!!! ; )

Storms Again and I'm Ready

South Range, WI.

67 deg. mostly cloudy, no wind.

Forecast = Partly cloudy early in the morning then clearing. Highs 90 to 95 inland...And 82 to 87 near lake superior. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph.

The RV park's wi-fi is down this morning, so I'm going to try to get a short post posted using a very slow air card connection this morning.

Not a whole lot happened yesterday. the CG ended up being only about 1/2 full.

We had some pretty severe storms go through the area again last night, but nothing major right here. Today, we'll be heading to Michigan, where I hope to have wi-fi at the park we'll be going to. If not, I'm pretty sure that there is no AT&T signal at the park so unless Jim can find a "hot spot" you won't hear anything from me for a week.

I'm all ready to go, and I think we'll be heading out from here pretty early this morning.

I'll post when I can. (Hopefully tomorrow morning).

Happy Independence Day!!!

South Range, WI.

68 deg. clear, no wind.

Forecast = Partly sunny with isolated showers and thunderstorms. Highs 90 to 95 inland...And 73 to 78 near lake superior. Southeast winds 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 20 percent.

Happy Independence Day!!!!!  I hope all of you have a fun, safe holiday!!!

Yesterday, it was the hottest that it's been since we've been here. My thermometer on the North side of me read 92 degrees at one time. : (  That's really hot for this part of the country and it was the main topic on the news last night.

Being that it was so warm, very few people were out and about here at the park. There were a few over at the pool, but even they didn't stay too long. Jim was outside for awhile in the morning, but stayed in all afternoon and evening.

He and Linda did go to a restaurant that they spotted the other day though. It's called The Breakwater Family Restaurant, and located just a little way into Superior as you enter on US 2. Linda had a BLT sandwich and Jim had the meat loaf dinner. Both of them said that the food was very good and the service was excellent.

A place worth remembering if we come back to this area again sometime.

I think I'm pretty much ready to leave here tomorrow. Both Jim and Linda have been slowly getting everything put away and checked out. My tanks still need to be dumped, but that will be done just before we leave so that they're empty when we get to the park in Michigan.

Did you know that the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council state that over 150 million hot dogs are consumed during Independence Day festivities?

Not What They Needed

South Range, WI.

65 deg. partly cloudy SW wind @ 6 mph.

Forecast = Partly cloudy. Scattered showers and thunderstorms early in the morning...Then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms in the late morning and afternoon. Highs 88 to 93 inland...And 82 to 87 near lake superior. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 30 percent.

We had a heavy T-storm go through here yesterday evening and that's definitely not what they need in this area. I don't know how much it rained, but it rained really hard for about an hour and then continued on for a good part of the night, many times with strong winds and lots of lightning.

This morning they're reporting quite a bit of wind damage in the area, and with everything saturated, like it is from the past heavy rains, they've issued new flood warnings for parts of the area.

Jim and Linda went back to the grocery store yesterday. They bought quite a bit of stuff, but not enough that they had any problems getting it all put away. ; )

Linda's been doing laundry and Jim has been starting to get me ready to travel. Yesterday he checked my fluid levels and I imagine today he'll check my and CLT's (Cute Little Truck's) tires. He also needs to call their mail forwarding service and have their mail sent up to Michigan and Linda said that she needs to call the bank to take care of some business.

Did you know that Calvin Coolidge, our nation's 30th president, was born on July 4th, 1872? He is the only president to claim this honor.

Surprised and Comments

South Range, WI.

61 deg. partly cloudy, no wind.

Forecast = Partly sunny. A chance of showers and thunderstorms in the morning...Then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Highs 85 to 90 well inland...And 70 to 75 near lake superior. Southeast winds 10 to 15 mph...Northeast near lake superior. Chance of rain 30 percent.

Still don't have much to write about. I'm really surprised that this park is as empty as it is. In fact, there's fewer RVs here now than anytime during our stay here so far. I suppose it could be that people are staying away from this area because of all the flooding that happened in this area almost 2 weeks ago.

I'm also thinking that because the 4th is on Wednesday, it may be difficult for people to get enough days off of work to include the weekend in the holiday. Of course it's always possible that the weekend after the 4th will be included in the holiday period.

Today, Jim and Linda are planning on going back into town to get a few more groceries. The CG where we'll be staying at in Michigan is pretty far from any stores, so they're going to stock up now, for our stay.

Oh, speaking of the CG in Michigan, I had a couple comments yesterday that I'd like to comment on.

The reason we're staying at the CG near Ahmeek is that Jim and Linda have been there before and really liked it and the people running it. It's a very quiet CG and I'm told the view is terrific!! It is small, but that's one thing that they like about it.

Thanks for the suggestion about the park in Houghton though, Darrell. Jim says that he and Linda will try to get over there and check it out, and who knows, maybe we'll stay there the next time we're in the area. : )

In the other comment, "westside mom" said that they may want to stay at the park I'll be staying at. That would be great, but be sure to call ahead. It is a small park and it's pretty full throughout most of the summer. Jim called and made reservations for me way back in May, before the CG was even open for the season, and even then couldn't get the exact dates that he wanted.

Groceries, Gronk's and Getting Ready

South Range, WI.

57 deg. clear, no wind.

Forecast = Partly cloudy. A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Highs 85 to 90 inland...And 77 to 82 near lake superior. South winds 5 to 10 mph.

Yeah, I know I haven't posted in the last couple days, but I really didn't have anything to post about. I've also been "down" for some reason too and when I get like that, I don't feel creative at all!! : (

The weather has been quite warm up here, but not nearly as hot as it has been in much of the country. We've had highs in the mid to upper 80's but I don't think we've had any 90's right here. A little further South from here, (and away from Lake Superior), it's been quite hot though.

Jim and Linda went grocery shopping one day, and yesterday, they went to a place called "Gronk's. It's a bar and Grill located on this side of Superior and it seems like a pretty popular place. Both Jim and Linda said that the food was good but they were definitely under staffed because the only 2 waitresses were running like crazy and once they took the orders, it took forever for the kitchen to prepare the food.

Jim and Linda had hoped to take CLT and go on a couple of scenic drives in the area while we're here, but the storm and the flood waters of about a week ago destroyed some of the roads either on the scenic drive or the roads getting to them. : (

They're working on getting the roads repaired, but there's so many damaged in the area that it's taking awhile.

We'll be staying here at the Northland Camping and RV Park until after the 4th. Then, on the 5th, we'll be heading up into the U P of Michigan to a Campground up near the little town of Ahmeek, (which is on the Keweenaw Peninsula which sticks out into Lake Superior). The CG is called Sunset Bay Campground, and Jim and Linda were there with Myrddin a couple years ago.

From what I can tell, it's a small CG and in fact, Jim says he thinks it'll be a real challenge to get me in there. From going back and reading Myrddin's old blogs, it sounds like it it should be worth it though, as it sounds like the views of the lake from the sites are "superior".  ; )

A couple of the problems though is that as of 2 years ago, there was no cell phone service and unless their wi-fi is working, there's no Internet service with-in 10 or so miles of the park either!!!

So,  ,  ,  ,  ,, once we leave here, I may not be able to post for the next week. Hopefully their wi-fi will be working.

Well, I'd better go. I know it's going to be awhile yet before we leave here, but I'm bored, so I'm going to start getting ready.
